This week from 4th-10th March is Hip Health Week, a cause that is close to the hearts of everyone at Love To Dream. Our mission is to help babies sleep safer for longer, giving you and your baby a healthy start in life.
Our Swaddle UP and Swaddle UP 50/50 Transitional bags are certified by the International Hip Dysplasia Institute and designed to allow for full range hip and leg flexion to guard against Hip Dysplasia from day one.
What is Hip Dysplasia?
Hip Dysplasia is the name given to describe a problem with the formation of a child’s hip joint. It can occur in the ball of the hip joint or in the socket, or both and can lead to complications as the child grows older and the joint is misaligned or underdeveloped. Sometimes corrective surgery is required to prevent the joint from dislocating or causing problems later in life. Symptoms don’t often show until after the child’s first birthday so babies in the UK are screened for Hip Dysplasia shortly after birth.
Unfortunately, the exact cause of Hip Dysplasia is unknown, but it usually develops around birth, after birth or during early childhood and is therefore thought of as a developmental condition. It is widely believed that the causes of Hip Dysplasia include genetics, softer bones during infancy or the positioning of the child during their first year of life.
In cultures where babies are positioned with their hips spread such as strapped to the mothers backs with their legs spread around the mother’s waist, cases of Hip Dysplasia are rarely seen. Whereas cultures that keep children’s legs extended on a cradleboard or by swaddling tightly have increased rates of Hip Dysplasia. It is therefore widely recommended that babies are swaddled using a hip safe method to avoid complications.
How does Love To Dream support Hip Health?
We understand the benefits of swaddling in helping babies to get a better night’s sleep, but we are also very aware of the dangers of swaddling too tightly. The Swaddle UP and Swaddle UP 50/50 Transitional bags offer all the benefits of swaddling with none of the dangers thanks to our unique design.
The wider bottom half of our swaddles helps to promote a healthy hip alignment and encourage your baby to sleep in their natural position with legs spread wide at the hips and arms up. It is this unique shape that helps babies sleep safer because not only does it reduce the risk of Hip Dysplasia, it also prevents them from rolling and removes the need for loose blankets, both of which are risk factors for Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS).
The Saviour of Sleep
Your baby will sleep soundly for longer because swaddling helps to cocoon them in a safe space that replicates the environment of the womb where they have limited movement and have grown used to the feeling of boundaries surrounding their limbs.
The startle reflex is one of the most common culprits for waking young babies but the arms up position of the Swaddle UP naturally prevents the startle reflex from jerking them awake and allows them to reach their mouth to self soothe. While the wide hip section allows them complete movement of their legs and hips within the comforting confines of the swaddle bag so their hips can fall in their natural wide-open position.
You benefit from the peace of mind that you can position your baby in the correct swaddling position easily, every time you swaddle them rather than the old-fashioned blanket swaddle technique that is hard to replicate effectively and safely each time, and which your baby inevitably wriggles out of within minutes. The Love To Dream Swaddle UP simply zips up and the dual zip means you can easily change your baby’s nappy in the night without having to un-swaddle them completely.
